Introduction
The strongest dated evidence from 2003–2004 does not support the idea that physicist Ning Li simply vanished immediately after receiving US defence funding. In May 2003, Li was still visibly involved in gravitational-wave research: the programme of an international conference at the MITRE Corporation identifies her as an honorary co-chairwoman, schedules her own paper, records her presenting another paper and makes her a session chair. A technical paper published for a February 2004 conference independently discusses Li’s 2003 work.[Integrity Research Institute]integrityresearchinstitute.orgIntegrity Research Institute
The next important marker is less secure but unusually specific. Correspondence attributed to physicist Eugene Podkletnov, dated June 2004 and later forwarded by researcher Tim Ventura, says Li was alive, working for the US Department of Defense (DoD), had telephoned Podkletnov twice that year and still maintained an apartment in Huntsville.[The Ethics of Madness]theethicsofmadness.blogspot.comThe Ethics of MadnessThe Ethics of Madness: August 2013August 25, 2013…
Taken together, these dates substantially narrow any credible “disappearance” timeline. They do not prove what classified work Li performed, validate her unconventional gravity claims or exclude every conceivable form of government secrecy. They do show that a story in which she disappeared around the end of her 2001–2002 defence project is chronologically difficult to sustain.
The 2003 technical presentation puts Li back on the record
The clearest anchor is the programme for the International High-Frequency Gravitational Waves Working Group’s Gravitational-Wave Conference, held at the MITRE Corporation in McLean, Virginia, from 6 to 9 May 2003. This document is considerably more useful than a later recollection that somebody “saw” Li. It names her repeatedly in an organised technical programme.[Integrity Research Institute]integrityresearchinstitute.orgIntegrity Research Institute
Li is identified on the programme’s first page as the conference’s honorary co-chairwoman, alongside co-chairmen Paul A. Murad and Robert M. L. Baker Jr. On 6 May, the programme says that a paper by Fang-Yu Li, Meng-Xi Tang and Dong-Ping Shi was “to be presented by Dr. Ning Li”. On 7 May, Li herself was scheduled to present “Measurability of AC Gravity Fields”, paper HFGW-03-106. On 8 May, she was listed as the session chairwoman.[Integrity Research Institute]integrityresearchinstitute.orgIntegrity Research Institute
That combination is more consequential than the shorthand claim that Li “gave a presentation in 2003”. She was apparently not merely a name carried over on an old paper. The schedule assigns her several active roles across three days. Although a programme alone cannot prove that every scheduled participant actually appeared, the later technical literature strengthens the identification. Baker’s 2004 conference paper explicitly cites Ning Li’s “Measurability of AC gravity fields” as a paper from the May 2003 MITRE meeting and discusses its technical argument.[Dr. Robert Baker]drrobertbaker.comDr. Robert Baker ROBERT ML BAKER, JRDr. Robert Baker ROBERT ML BAKER, JR
A surviving copy of the conference paper’s text also identifies its subject as the generation and measurement of what Li called “AC gravity” using high-temperature superconductivity.[Google Groups]groups.google.comGoogle GroupsMitre Corporation Conference related to Exotic WMDJune 10, 2003… Baker’s subsequent account says Li’s calculation implied that high-temperature superconductors subjected to an impressed magnetic field could generate approximately 11 kilowatts of gravitational-wave power. That is the origin of the much-repeated “11 kilowatts” associated with her last period of public research.[Dr. Robert Baker]drrobertbaker.comDr. Robert Baker ROBERT ML BAKER, JRDr. Robert Baker ROBERT ML BAKER, JR
None of this establishes that such an effect was experimentally demonstrated. Indeed, Baker’s 2004 paper describes proposed precursor experiments needed to test relevant components, including the alternating magnetic field and fabrication of an appropriately sized superconducting material. The distinction matters: evidence that Li remained professionally active is much stronger here than evidence that her proposed gravity technology actually worked.[Dr. Robert Baker]drrobertbaker.comDr. Robert Baker ROBERT ML BAKER, JRDr. Robert Baker ROBERT ML BAKER, JR
For disappearance claims, however, the scientific validity of the theory is a separate question. Whatever the merits of the physics, a dated May 2003 conference record places Li within an identifiable research network after the completion date normally given for AC Gravity’s defence-funded project.
The conference record is stronger than a single sighting
The MITRE evidence also reveals why chronology needs to be reconstructed from documents rather than from later internet summaries. Some accounts describe 2003 as the moment when Li “abruptly disappeared”, but the actual conference schedule shows a relatively substantial professional presence immediately before the public trail became sparse.[Integrity Research Institute]integrityresearchinstitute.orgIntegrity Research Institute
The programme records a community of researchers working on high-frequency gravitational-wave generation, detection, superconductivity, communications and propulsion. Li’s own paper sat within the superconductivity portion of that programme. The meeting also included a presentation on NASA’s Breakthrough Propulsion Physics Project and papers on other proposed gravitational-wave technologies.[Integrity Research Institute]integrityresearchinstitute.orgIntegrity Research Institute
A February 2004 paper by Baker, prepared for the American Institute of Physics-sponsored Space Technology and Applications International Forum, then referred back to the MITRE conference as the first international conference dedicated to high-frequency gravitational waves. It described Li’s 2003 superconducting proposal directly and included her paper in its references.[Dr. Robert Baker]drrobertbaker.comDr. Robert Baker ROBERT ML BAKER, JRDr. Robert Baker ROBERT ML BAKER, JR
That 2004 publication does not establish that Baker had seen Li in 2004. It does something narrower but still useful: it independently demonstrates that her May 2003 contribution had entered the technical discussion and was still being treated as part of the field the following year. This makes the 2003 conference evidence harder to dismiss as a retrospective internet rumour.
The surviving programme also complicates descriptions of Li as having disappeared immediately into a completely inaccessible government programme. MITRE operates federally funded research and development centres, but appearing at a MITRE-hosted technical meeting is not itself proof that the presenter was engaged in classified work. The document establishes her conference role and topic; it does not establish the classification status of her employment or experiments.
The 2004 report places her alive and in contact
The more direct 2004 evidence comes from correspondence attributed to Eugene Podkletnov, another researcher associated with controversial claims involving superconductors and gravity. The surviving version is an email dated 16 June 2004 from Podkletnov to Tim Ventura, subsequently forwarded by Ventura on 21 July. It says Li was “all right” and working for the DoD, adding that she was therefore unable to discuss her work openly.[The Ethics of Madness]theethicsofmadness.blogspot.comThe Ethics of MadnessThe Ethics of Madness: August 2013August 25, 2013…
More important for chronology, the message contains details that go beyond a vague assertion that Podkletnov had heard she was alive. He reportedly said Li had telephoned him “a couple of times” during 2004 and that they had briefly discussed superconductors and their structure. He also said she still had an apartment in Huntsville, although he did not know where her laboratory was.[The Ethics of Madness]theethicsofmadness.blogspot.comThe Ethics of MadnessThe Ethics of Madness: August 2013August 25, 2013…
If authentic and accurate, those details are difficult to reconcile with a literal disappearance before 2004. They would mean that Li was not merely believed to be alive by an old colleague: she had reportedly initiated telephone contact with him during that year.
There is nevertheless an important source-quality limitation. Unlike the MITRE schedule, the 2004 exchange is not an official government record or a contemporaneously published academic paper. The surviving copies circulate through later websites and archives devoted to antigravity and UFO-related research. A 2019 investigation reproduced the same essential wording, and the 2023 Huntsville Business Journal investigation likewise reported that Podkletnov had told Ventura Li was alive and still doing defence work.[UFOs Scientific Research]ufos-scientificresearch.blogspot.comanomalous aerospace phenomena and antiUFOs Scientific ResearchAnomalous Aerospace Phenomena; and "anti-gravity"Feb 23, 2019 · "All I can tell you is that Ning is all right, sh…
The appropriate evidential description is therefore reported 2004 correspondence, not independently verified DoD employment documentation. Its specificity makes it valuable, but its provenance means it should not bear more weight than it can support.
“Missing” and “no longer publicly reachable” are different claims
The Ventura correspondence also preserves the ambiguity from which the later disappearance story could grow. Ventura reportedly told Podkletnov that he had repeatedly tried an email address supplied for Li and could see from return receipts that somebody was reading the messages, yet he received no reply. Podkletnov, for his part, said he did not possess a current working email address or telephone number for her.[Reddit]reddit.comSolving the Mystery Behind the Disappearance of Dr. Ning Li… 11-kilowatts of output effect.” The significance of that amount is…
That is genuine evidence of a researcher becoming difficult for outsiders to contact. It is not evidence that she was physically missing.
The distinction is central to testing suppression theories. By 2004, at least three propositions can easily become conflated:
- Li had largely disappeared from public scientific publication and ordinary professional contact.
- Podkletnov reportedly said she was alive, in telephone contact with him and working for the DoD.
- Later observers interpreted the lack of public information as evidence that Li herself had mysteriously disappeared.
Only the first proposition is clearly compatible with the sparse public record. The second, if the correspondence is authentic, directly argues against the third during 2004.
This distinction is reinforced by later reporting. In 2023, the Huntsville Business Journal interviewed Li’s son, George Men, who said his mother had never actually been a missing person and that she continued defence-related research after leaving academia. The article reports his account that she obtained a top-secret security clearance and consequently stopped publicly discussing her research.[Huntsville Business Journal]huntsvillebusinessjournal.comHuntsville Business JournalUncovering The Mystery Of Huntsville’s Brilliant Anti-gravity Scientist - Huntsville Business Journal… That family testimony cannot retroactively authenticate every detail of the 2004 email, but it is strikingly consistent with its central claim: withdrawal from open publication was not the same thing as physical disappearance.
What the 2003–2004 dates rule out
The evidence is most useful when treated as a set of chronological constraints rather than as proof of a larger theory.
A disappearance immediately after the defence award is contradicted by the 2003 record. AC Gravity’s prototype agreement is commonly identified as running from 25 April 2001 to 25 September 2002, with $448,970 in US government funding through US Army Aviation and Missile Command. A surviving reproduction of the agreement details gives those dates and describes the project as a “Gravito - Electro Magnetic Superconductivity Experiment”.[The Living Moon]thelivingmoon.comThe Living Moon Anti-gravity and the Search for Dr. Ning-LiThe Living Moon Anti-gravity and the Search for Dr. Ning-Li Yet Li was assigned multiple roles at the MITRE gravitational-wave conference in May 2003.[Integrity Research Institute]integrityresearchinstitute.orgIntegrity Research Institute
A disappearance during 2003 is difficult to square with the reported 2004 contacts. The Podkletnov correspondence says Li telephoned him more than once during 2004. If that message is genuine, any theory requiring Li to have become physically missing immediately after her May 2003 conference appearance fails on its chronology.[The Ethics of Madness]theethicsofmadness.blogspot.comThe Ethics of MadnessThe Ethics of Madness: August 2013August 25, 2013…
The dates do not support the later claim that she had already returned to China. The 2004 correspondence instead places her continuing to maintain an apartment in Huntsville and describes her as working for the US DoD.[The Ethics of Madness]theethicsofmadness.blogspot.comThe Ethics of MadnessThe Ethics of Madness: August 2013August 25, 2013… Later family reporting went further: Men told the Huntsville Business Journal that Chinese officials approached his mother in 2008 about returning to China, but that she rejected the offer.[Huntsville Business Journal]huntsvillebusinessjournal.comHuntsville Business JournalUncovering The Mystery Of Huntsville’s Brilliant Anti-gravity Scientist - Huntsville Business Journal… That later account makes stories of an earlier secret return to China still harder to fit into the known sequence.
The cumulative effect is not to eliminate mystery but to move it. The question becomes less “Where did Ning Li suddenly disappear to after receiving defence money?” and more “Why did a researcher who remained active in 2003 and was reportedly doing defence work in 2004 almost completely disappear from the public scientific record?”
Those are materially different questions.
What the dates cannot establish
The same chronology that weakens an early-disappearance story does not answer everything about Li’s post-academic career.
First, the MITRE evidence establishes participation in a conference, not successful antigravity technology. Baker’s 2004 discussion of Li’s calculations explicitly proceeds to proposed component tests. A theoretical estimate of gravitational-wave output should not be transformed into evidence that an operational device produced that output.[Dr. Robert Baker]drrobertbaker.comDr. Robert Baker ROBERT ML BAKER, JRDr. Robert Baker ROBERT ML BAKER, JR
Second, the conference does not establish that Li’s research was classified. Her later silence may be consistent with classified defence work, especially given Podkletnov’s reported statement and her son’s later account, but the surviving 2003 programme itself is an openly circulated conference document.[Integrity Research Institute]integrityresearchinstitute.orgIntegrity Research Institute
Third, the 2004 email is not equivalent to a personnel record. It is evidence about what Podkletnov reportedly told Ventura. Without a contemporaneous DoD employment document, it cannot by itself prove precisely which agency employed Li, what laboratory she used, what security restrictions applied or what she accomplished there.
Finally, a sparse public trail after 2004 remains real. The 2023 investigation noted the absence of later publications and the difficulty earlier researchers had in contacting her.[Huntsville Business Journal]huntsvillebusinessjournal.comHuntsville Business JournalUncovering The Mystery Of Huntsville’s Brilliant Anti-gravity Scientist - Huntsville Business Journal… That gap deserves to be described accurately, but it should not be backdated across evidence that Li was still professionally active.
The narrow window left by the evidence
For chronology-based assessment, 2003 and 2004 are therefore unusually important. May 2003 supplies a comparatively strong documentary anchor: Ning Li was named as honorary co-chairwoman of a specialist conference, scheduled to present her own paper, assigned to present another and listed as chairing a session.[Integrity Research Institute]integrityresearchinstitute.orgIntegrity Research Institute February 2004 technical literature continued to cite and discuss that work.[Dr. Robert Baker]drrobertbaker.comDr. Robert Baker ROBERT ML BAKER, JRDr. Robert Baker ROBERT ML BAKER, JR The reported June 2004 Podkletnov email then says she was alive, working for the DoD and had telephoned him during the year.[The Ethics of Madness]theethicsofmadness.blogspot.comThe Ethics of MadnessThe Ethics of Madness: August 2013August 25, 2013…
The evidence therefore supports a much narrower formulation than the familiar “antigravity scientist disappeared” story. Li became increasingly absent from open scientific life, and outsiders had difficulty reaching her, but the available chronology places her active in 2003 and reportedly alive and connected to defence work in 2004.
That does not prove why her public research stopped. It does not disclose what happened inside any classified programme, and it does not settle the scientific merits of her proposed gravitational effects. What it does establish is the minimum chronology that any suppression hypothesis must accommodate: whatever explains Ning Li’s retreat from public view, it cannot plausibly begin by treating her as already physically vanished when dated evidence still places her in the research community in 2003 and in reported contact with a colleague in 2004.
