Introduction

Researcher “death lists” in UFO, antigravity and alleged suppressed-technology narratives are rarely fixed datasets assembled from a single, consistent criterion. They tend to grow in stages. A small group of genuinely puzzling deaths or disappearances is first noticed; later compilers add people who share progressively looser attributes — employment in aerospace, access to defence facilities, work in nuclear physics, interest in unconventional propulsion, contact with UFO investigators, or simply an unexplained or premature death. Different outcomes such as suicide, homicide, accident, natural death and unresolved disappearance can then be presented together as if they were instances of the same event.

The crucial issue is therefore not whether every case on such a list is mundane. Some genuinely remain unresolved. It is whether the rule for inclusion stays stable as the list expands. Recent and historical examples show that it often does not. From individual cases to aggregated lists

A death list normally begins with cases that already possess several attention-grabbing features at once: an unusual scientific field, defence or aerospace connections, a comparatively young death, an unexplained disappearance, or circumstances that leave unanswered questions. Once those cases are discussed together, however, the list itself can become the organising idea. Researchers start looking for additional people who resemble the existing entries in some respect rather than asking whether there is evidence connecting the cases to one another.

The rapidly circulating US “missing scientists” story in April 2026 provides an unusually clear example because several stages of its growth can be observed almost in real time. A viral post cited by PolitiFact on 14 April referred loosely to “like 10 disappearances in the last two years”. By 22 April, another widely circulated formulation referred to 11 missing, dead or “suicided” scientists. A community-compiled list posted on Reddit on 25 April went much further. It contained 28 entries, extending backwards from recent cases to Mark McCandlish in 2021, Dallas Hardwick in 2014 and Stanley Meyer in 1998, while also incorporating a separate group of Chinese researchers. The discussion underneath explicitly encouraged contributors to supply further lists and spreadsheets from which additional names might be added. This creates an important asymmetry. A proposed victim can enter the list because of one suggestive characteristic, but the absence of the other characteristics does not necessarily remove them. Someone associated with antigravity can qualify without a classified programme; someone with a security clearance can qualify without UFO research; someone murdered can qualify without an unusual scientific speciality. Once these different routes into the category are allowed simultaneously, the eligible population becomes very large.

Official interest does not resolve that problem. In April 2026 the US House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform requested information about reports of at least ten people linked to nuclear secrets or rocket technology who had died or disappeared. The committee described the underlying reporting as unconfirmed and said it was investigating whether connections existed. Why unrelated research fields get combined

The strongest expansion mechanism is bridge terminology: broad labels capable of connecting fields that are technically and institutionally quite different.

“Advanced aerospace”, for example, can include rocket engineering, planetary science, materials engineering and military aircraft work. “Nuclear” can describe weapons laboratories, fusion research, reactor science or merely employment at an institution with nuclear responsibilities. “Exotic propulsion” may encompass speculative gravity modification, unconventional energy claims or UFO propulsion theories. Once those categories are treated as interchangeable signs of access to the same secret, almost any two researchers can be linked through a chain of associations.

The 2026 list illustrates the effect. PolitiFact found NASA-associated individuals whose publicly described work included comets and asteroids, microwave radiometry, Earth-science missions, rocket materials and electrical engineering. Other entries included MIT plasma physicist Nuno Loureiro, chemical-biology researcher Jason Thomas, Caltech astrophysicist Carl Grillmair and antigravity researchers Ning Li and Amy Eskridge. Those occupations are not meaningless. Aerospace, nuclear laboratories and defence contracting can involve sensitive information. But employment within the same enormous technological ecosystem is much weaker evidence than participation in the same project, possession of the same information or exposure to the same adversary. PolitiFact found no evidence supporting the circulating claim that nearly all the people had worked together. UFO-related lists can expand even further through retrospective association. A person need not have been primarily a UFO researcher while alive. Later writers may connect them because they studied gravity, propulsion, plasma, astronomy or another subject considered potentially relevant to hypothetical UFO technology. Conversely, someone principally known within UFO circles may be described generically as a “scientist”, putting them into the same rhetorical category as laboratory researchers whose careers had no demonstrated UFO component.

Ning Li shows why that process can be especially powerful. Her published work on possible gravitational effects involving superconductors made her a natural figure in antigravity discussions. After she ceased publishing publicly, internet accounts increasingly portrayed her as having “disappeared”. Yet a 2023 Huntsville Business Journal investigation located her son, who said she had never disappeared or moved to China. According to his account, she remained in Huntsville, continued work connected with Redstone Arsenal until being seriously injured when struck by a vehicle in 2014, and died in 2021. Once Li is placed beside a genuinely missing researcher, a murder victim and someone who died by suicide, the list can visually imply a common “fate” even though the underlying events are different.

Category drift turns unlike deaths into one apparent pattern

The same broadening occurs with the event being counted. A narrowly framed hypothesis might initially concern researchers who were murdered because of sensitive work. But lists commonly expand to include homicide, suicide, accidental death, natural death, unexplained death and disappearance. These categories pose different evidential questions and cannot automatically be treated as equivalent outcomes of one suppression mechanism.

The 2026 cases make that difference concrete. Nuno Loureiro was killed in a shooting for which authorities identified a suspect; the US Department of Justice said the gunman had planned the attacks for years. Carl Grillmair was also murdered, but investigators reportedly believed he did not know the arrested suspect. Other people simply disappeared, and authorities in some of those cases said they had found no indication of foul play. Jason Thomas, after disappearing, was found dead in a lake; authorities reportedly did not suspect foul play. Combining them under “dead or missing scientists” is descriptively true at a sufficiently broad level, but that broad description loses precisely the information needed to test the stronger claim. If a coordinated group were eliminating people to suppress research, investigators would look for shared motive, communications, perpetrators, methods, threats, projects or intelligence connections. Counting every type of adverse outcome together does not establish any of those links.

Historical lists show that this is not a new feature of UFO-era social media. The Marconi scientist deaths controversy of the 1980s followed a similar trajectory. In March 1988 a parliamentary question asked the British government about possible security implications in the deaths of six named men — Victor Moore, Arshad Sharif, Vimal Dajibhai, David Sands, Peter Peapell and John Brittan. By 1990, Tony Collins’s book Open Verdict presented 25 mysterious deaths in the defence industry. Contemporary discussion already acknowledged a crucial point often lost in subsequent retellings: not all 25 were Marconi scientists. Most were connected more broadly with defence-related employment or electronic-warfare work. This does not show that the individual Marconi-era deaths were all satisfactorily explained. It shows how the object being counted changed. A question about several deaths possibly linked to one defence company became a larger narrative about deaths across a defence-industrial network. Later summaries could then refer to “25 Marconi scientists”, effectively converting an expanded investigative sample into a much tighter occupational cluster than the source material warranted.

How list expansion reinforces itself

Once an aggregated list exists, several feedback mechanisms can make it increasingly persuasive even without new evidence connecting its members.

The denominator disappears. A list may count ten, twenty or thirty researchers who died, but rarely states how many thousands of people worked in the eligible industries during the same period. Without that denominator, readers cannot determine whether the number of deaths is statistically unusual. A growing numerator alone looks increasingly significant.

Cases are selected after the outcome is known. The compiler starts with unusual deaths and then searches biographies for a connecting feature. That procedure is very different from defining a specific population of researchers first and prospectively measuring whether their mortality, homicide or disappearance rate differs from an appropriate comparison group.

Multiple inclusion rules operate at once. One person is added for antigravity research, another for NASA employment, another for a nuclear-laboratory badge, another for a UFO association and another because a death was violent. The resulting list looks homogeneous because the inclusion criteria are normally omitted from the headline.

Uncertainty counts in only one direction. Missing cause-of-death information can become “mysterious death”. An unexplained disappearance can become evidence of targeting. Lack of public information about classified work can be interpreted as evidence that the work was classified. Yet when ordinary explanations emerge, they may not receive equivalent weight or the person’s name may remain on older versions of the list.

Ning Li again provides a useful demonstration. Years without public publications helped create a disappearance legend; the later discovery that she had remained in Huntsville did not erase the many older pages and videos built around that premise. Older lists become reservoirs for newer ones. The April 2026 Reddit compilation explicitly drew suggestions from pre-existing collections and a community spreadsheet. Research on conspiracy cognition helps explain why such structures can feel compelling. A 2025 review of the literature distinguishes biases involved in forming beliefs from those involved in updating them, including intentionality, proportionality and confirmation biases. Separate research highlighted by Nature Reviews Psychology found a small but robust association between conspiracy belief and a tendency to reject randomness as an explanation for events. Neither finding proves that any particular researcher-death claim is false. The number of names is not the strength of the evidence

The central methodological mistake is treating list length as corroboration. Twenty names do not provide twenty pieces of evidence for one conspiracy if the reason each name qualifies is different. In fact, enlarging a list through category drift can make the apparent pattern stronger while making the underlying hypothesis less precise.

A useful test is to reverse the normal construction process. Instead of asking, “What do these dead researchers have in common?”, first specify what the alleged suppression programme predicts. If the claim concerns elimination of antigravity researchers, define what counts as antigravity research before examining deaths. If it concerns scientists with access to a particular classified programme, identify evidence of access independently of what later happened to them. If the proposed mechanism is assassination, do not silently count natural deaths and unresolved disappearances as equivalent instances.

The same discipline should apply to removals. A credible list needs rules explaining when a case stops qualifying. If evidence that somebody died naturally, never disappeared, lacked the claimed research connection or was killed for an independently established reason does not permit removal, then the list is no longer functioning as a testable dataset. It has become an archive of suggestive stories.

This distinction leaves room for genuine unresolved cases. A disappearance with no explanation remains unresolved; an open verdict remains an open verdict; credible evidence of threats deserves investigation. But uncertainty in several separate cases is not itself evidence that they share a cause.

What actually makes a death cluster meaningful

A researcher-death cluster becomes evidentially stronger when its connections are established independently of the deaths themselves. Shared membership of a small project, access to the same compartmented information, documented threats from the same source, similar unexplained forensic evidence, communications among victims, a common suspect or statistically exceptional mortality within a clearly defined population would all matter far more than the raw size of a retrospective list.

That standard also explains why the familiar UFO and antigravity compilations are difficult to assess as unified claims. Their most striking entries often deserve individual investigation, but the larger lists repeatedly cross boundaries between UFO research, gravity modification, nuclear science, aerospace engineering, defence contracting and unrelated technical work, while simultaneously crossing boundaries between murder, suicide, accident, natural illness and disappearance. The clearest lesson is not that every suspicious-scientist story can be dismissed. It is that a “death list” should never be treated as the starting evidence for its own organising theory. The important questions come one level earlier: Who decided which names belonged, what was the original inclusion rule, when did that rule broaden, and would the same compiler remove a name when contrary evidence emerged? Tracking those changes often reveals more about the apparent pattern than simply counting how many names the latest version contains.
