Introduction

Ning Li’s long public silence after the early 2000s is one of the main reasons her story was later recast as a mysterious “disappearance”. Yet the best available evidence points to a less sensational mechanism: Li moved from an unusually public academic career into defence-linked research, and her son says she obtained a Top Secret security clearance that prevented her from discussing the work she was doing. There are important limits to that explanation. The public record confirms that her company received US Army funding for an experimental gravity-related prototype, and later records place her at a specialist conference in 2003. But the claim that her subsequent work was classified comes principally from her family; publicly accessible documents do not reveal what she worked on, how successful it was, or precisely when and under what programme it became classified. Secrecy can therefore explain why outsiders stopped hearing from Li. It cannot establish that she had invented operational antigravity technology.

The reported security clearance and secrecy

The transition can be traced to Li’s move away from ordinary university research. After leaving the University of Alabama in Huntsville, she established AC Gravity LLC. A surviving reproduction of the Department of Defense’s FY2001 report on “Other Transactions” identifies agreement DAAH01-01-9-R001, awarded by the US Army Aviation and Missile Command to AC Gravity. That is stronger evidence of genuine military interest than the vague suggestion that Li simply vanished into a secret laboratory. The most consequential account of what happened next comes from Li’s son, George Men, interviewed by the Huntsville Business Journal in 2023. Men said his mother continued working for the Department of Defense and received a Top Secret clearance. He contrasted this period directly with her university career: she had previously enjoyed publishing her results, whereas after obtaining the clearance she could no longer share her work and became markedly quieter. That testimony fits the basic mechanics of classified defence employment. The Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency defines a security clearance as an eligibility determination for access to national-security information. That distinction matters when interpreting Li’s silence. A Top Secret clearance would not, by itself, forbid a scientist from ever publishing anything again. The careful formulation, therefore, is not that “Top Secret status forced Ning Li to disappear”. It is that her son reports she entered classified defence work, and the normal restrictions associated with such work provide a credible mechanism for why a formerly publishing researcher could abruptly become almost invisible to the scientific community.

How her behaviour changed after academia

The contrast between Li’s two professional phases is unusually sharp. In academia she left an ordinary scholarly trail: journal papers, collaborators, experiments and outside discussion of her theories. Her superconductivity-and-gravity work was controversial, but it was available for other scientists to read and challenge. After AC Gravity received Army funding, that trail contracted dramatically. There was no comparable stream of peer-reviewed papers reporting the outcome of the funded prototype experiment. Yet Li did not immediately vanish from professional activity. A bibliography of the 2003 Gravitational-Wave Conference at the MITRE Corporation records a contribution by Ning Li entitled “Measurability of AC gravity fields”, paper HFGW-03-106, at the 6–9 May meeting. This 2003 appearance is an important chronological anchor. It means that the end of Li’s conventional publication record should not be mistaken for evidence that she had ceased working or had physically disappeared. At least for a time, she was still participating in a specialised research environment connected with subjects close to her earlier work.

Later technical literature also discussed the substance attributed to that 2003 contribution. Robert M. L. Baker Jr., writing about proposed high-frequency gravitational-wave experiments, described Li’s analysis as involving high-temperature superconductors and an estimated 11-kilowatt gravitational-wave output under particular assumed conditions. The subsequent information gap is precisely where the “missing scientist” narrative grew. By 2004, people interested in the field were already trying to locate Li and obtain information about her research. The later Huntsville Business Journal investigation describes attempts to contact her and reports that physicist Eugene Podkletnov told an enquirer she was alive, still involved with Department of Defense work and unable to discuss it. Men’s account adds a human dimension that cannot be recovered from contract records. He said the secrecy affected his mother’s demeanour: she became quieter and sometimes returned from work visibly worn down. That observation cannot tell outsiders what programme she worked on or whether its experiments succeeded. The distinction is fundamental to the disappearance story. Public visibility and physical whereabouts are different things. A scientist can vanish from journals, conferences and searchable databases while continuing to live and work in the same city. Why classified work can look like disappearance

Li’s case illustrates a mechanism that readily produces mystery around defence researchers. Academic science normally leaves abundant traces. Researchers publish papers, list affiliations, attend conferences, maintain institutional pages, acknowledge grants and appear in citation databases. When somebody accustomed to that system moves into classified work, several of those signals can disappear simultaneously.

The US industrial-security system makes such a transition entirely ordinary in principle. Companies performing government work that requires access to classified information can receive facility clearances, while individual personnel receive eligibility according to the needs of their positions. For an outsider trying to reconstruct a career years later, that produces an asymmetry. The public can sometimes see that a defence relationship existed — as with AC Gravity’s Army agreement — without being able to see the resulting technical reports, experimental data, later contracts or internal programme history. An information vacuum of that kind invites people to substitute speculation for documentation.

That appears to have happened with Li. In 2008, physicist Jack Sarfatti publicly claimed that she had disappeared and apparently returned to China. The later family account directly contradicts this: Men said his mother remained in the United States and continued her defence work. The episode shows how easily two different facts can become fused. “Scientists outside her programme could no longer contact her” gradually became “Ning Li disappeared”; speculation about Chinese interest became “Ning Li returned to China”. Once those claims circulated without access to her classified professional life or private family life, absence of public information began functioning as supposed evidence for the story.

In reality, the silence itself requires no extraordinary mechanism. Classified work is designed to remove sensitive technical information from unrestricted circulation. The US government’s own security guidance states that people entrusted with classified information must prevent disclosure to unauthorised persons, including people who lack either the necessary clearance or a specific need to know. What classified work does not prove about antigravity

The strongest version of the Ning Li story makes an attractive inference: the Army funded her unusual research, the results disappeared from public view, she obtained a Top Secret clearance, and therefore her experiments must have worked. The evidence does not justify that final step.

The 2001 agreement proves that the Army considered the proposed experiment worth funding. Its language about potentially enormous military value demonstrates the stakes if the concept succeeded. But speculative defence research is funded precisely because an uncertain idea might be valuable enough to test. Nor does classification, even if Men’s description of Li’s subsequent programme is completely accurate, reveal the programme’s outcome. Work may be classified because its objectives, methods, potential applications, vulnerabilities, associated programmes or even negative technical findings have national-security relevance. There is an additional reason for caution. Defence agencies themselves later continued to examine unconventional gravity concepts without treating them as established technology. A Defense Intelligence Agency report prepared under the Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications programme reviewed “The Role of Superconductors in Gravity Research” and discussed Li and Torr’s earlier work as part of the field’s technical history. The evidence therefore supports three conclusions of very different strength. First, the defence connection is documented: AC Gravity received nearly $449,000 from the Army for a gravity-related superconductivity experiment. Second, classified continuation is credible but less independently documented: Li’s son says she obtained Top Secret clearance and continued defence work, and contemporary accounts are consistent with her becoming unavailable to outside researchers. That separation is the key to understanding Ning Li’s public silence. There is a real secret at the centre of the story in the ordinary sense that some of her later professional activity appears to have been unavailable to the public. But secrecy is not itself evidence of the extraordinary conclusion later built around it. The documented transition into defence-linked work offers a straightforward explanation for why Ning Li seemed to vanish from open science — and why an information gap eventually became mistaken for the disappearance of the scientist herself.
