Which Evidence Came First in a Suspicious Death?

Introduction

In alleged UFO- or antigravity-researcher assassination cases, the timing of evidence is often as important as its content. A police finding, suicide note, documented earlier suicide attempt, medical record or family account created at or near the time of death is not automatically correct. But it normally starts with an evidential advantage over an assassination theory assembled years later, because the later account has had more opportunity to absorb rumours, selective details and a developing conspiracy narrative.

James E. McDonald illustrates the point particularly clearly. His 1971 death was treated as suicide, and the record includes an earlier self-inflicted shooting and notes associated with both incidents. Decades later, his prominence as a scientific UFO advocate helped generate suspicions that he had instead been eliminated. Amy Eskridge presents a more difficult variation: her 2022 death was ruled suicide, but communications reportedly written before her death and publicised much later contain explicit denials that she would kill herself. Why timing changes the weight of evidence

A contemporary record has one major advantage: it was produced before later interpreters knew what narrative would eventually become controversial. That does not make contemporary investigators infallible. Police can make mistakes, relatives can misunderstand events, and an official ruling can be incomplete. The important point is narrower. Evidence recorded before an assassination theory exists cannot have been retrospectively selected because it fits that later theory.

The same principle works in the other direction. A genuinely authenticated message written by a researcher before death saying that they feared being killed is more significant than somebody recalling, ten years afterwards, that the researcher had seemed frightened. The crucial date is therefore the date the evidence was created, not merely the date it became public.

That distinction matters greatly with documentary material. A screenshot released in 2026 may purport to reproduce a message sent in 2022. If authentic, the underlying message is contemporary evidence even though its public appearance is much later. But its evidential value depends on provenance: investigators would ideally want the original device or account data, metadata, an independently preserved copy, testimony from the recipient and consistency with other communications. A later publication date does not erase contemporary origin, but neither does a displayed timestamp authenticate itself.

This is why evidence in these cases is better understood as a hierarchy rather than a contest between two fixed camps. Near-contemporaneous police and medical records, physical evidence, original communications and independently documented behaviour ordinarily deserve substantial attention. Later testimony can add important information, particularly where records were inaccessible, but claims that emerge only after a suspicious-death narrative has become established require additional scrutiny.

The distinction is especially important because suicide itself is rarely reducible to one fact. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says suicide is not caused by a single factor and identifies a previous suicide attempt, mental illness, chronic pain and serious personal or financial difficulties among factors that can increase risk. Consequently, neither a previous attempt nor an official suicide ruling should be converted into a simplistic argument that homicide was impossible. Their significance is comparative: a later assassination hypothesis has to explain the already-existing evidence at least as well as the original interpretation does.

McDonald: the chronology existed before the conspiracy

Atmospheric physicist James E. McDonald is particularly useful because the principal evidence supporting suicide did not arise from later attempts to rebut UFO conspiracy theories.

McDonald was unquestionably an important figure in scientific UFO advocacy. His 1971 American Meteorological Society obituary described an established atmospheric scientist who had become heavily involved in the UFO controversy, interviewing witnesses, criticising official approaches and pressing for more serious scientific investigation. That provides a possible motive narrative for later suspicions, but motive is not evidence that a killing occurred. The chronology surrounding his death contains a much more direct set of observations.

The Arizona Daily Star’s archive, republished in its “Tales from the Morgue” series, records that McDonald’s body was found near Tucson on 13 June 1971 and that his death was ruled suicide. A revolver was beside the body. The earlier attempt fundamentally changes the evidential problem. Current CDC and NIMH guidance identifies a previous suicide attempt as a major risk factor for subsequent suicidal behaviour. Again, this cannot prove why McDonald died. The later assassination suspicion tends to reverse that order. Online discussions now foreground McDonald’s clashes with UFO sceptics, government interest in him and the dramatic circumstances of his death, then ask whether those facts indicate suppression. One widely circulated 2023 discussion, for example, explicitly connected McDonald’s UFO research and FBI files with the possibility that he was “murdered to preserve the UFO coverup”. The FBI material does establish another fact that can sound sinister when removed from chronology: files concerning McDonald existed. A UFO-document archive that obtained part of the material through the Freedom of Information Act published those records in 1999. But the existence of government files on an outspoken scientist does not itself connect the government to his death. To make that transition, evidence would be needed showing operational interest in harming him, interference with the death investigation, manipulation of physical evidence or some comparable link. The result is an important asymmetry. Evidence that McDonald was controversial and attracted official attention is real. Evidence of an earlier suicide attempt is also real. But those two propositions do not carry the same causal relevance to his death. The first supplies material from which a later motive theory can be constructed; the second documents behaviour directly relevant to the manner of death before the fatal event occurred.

Eskridge shows why “later claim” can be misleading

Amy Eskridge’s case demonstrates the opposite complication: evidence can become publicly prominent years later while allegedly having been created shortly before the death itself.

Eskridge, an Alabama researcher associated with exotic propulsion and gravity-modification ideas, died on 11 June 2022 aged 34. Her obituary was published that month and described her scientific interests and work, but did not present her death as a suspicious killing. The assassination narrative grew substantially later. Online discussion in 2023 connected Eskridge to claims by retired British military intelligence officer Franc Milburn about an antigravity researcher allegedly killed using a directed-energy weapon. Significantly, an archived version of that discussion acknowledged that Milburn had apparently not named Eskridge in the earlier interview; internet researchers inferred that she was the person concerned, while a subsequently circulated document presented the identification more directly.[Archive.ph]archive.phOpen source on archive.ph.

That sequence is precisely the kind of evidential drift for which chronology is useful. “A source alleged that an unnamed researcher had been murdered” can gradually become “a source said Eskridge was murdered” as the identification is repeated. Unless the intermediate steps are checked, the later formulation can look more definite than the original claim.

However, Eskridge’s reported messages make the case materially less straightforward. In 2026, reporting highlighted messages attributed to her from May 2022 — before her death — in which she explicitly said that reports claiming she had killed herself or overdosed should not be believed. If independently authenticated, such a message is not properly classified as a “later assassination suspicion”. It is contemporary evidence disclosed later. That distinction is essential. A statement written before death predicting that the death might falsely be labelled suicide has far more potential evidential significance than an acquaintance developing that suspicion years afterwards.

Yet it still does not establish homicide by itself. The message records Eskridge’s belief or expectation. It does not independently demonstrate who threatened her, whether an alleged attack occurred, whether another person was present at her death or whether the forensic evidence contradicts suicide. There is also contemporary or near-contemporary evidence pointing away from the later murder narrative. Eskridge’s family published an affectionate obituary shortly after her death without alleging foul play. More decisively, when the case resurfaced publicly in 2026, her father Richard Eskridge rejected suspicions that her death was mysterious. This leaves a genuine evidential tension rather than a clean victory for either narrative. The official conclusion and family’s position support suicide; an allegedly pre-death message, if authenticated in its original form, is relevant evidence that Eskridge herself anticipated that such a conclusion might be false. The absence from the accessible public record of detailed police, medical-examiner and forensic documentation prevents outsiders from confidently resolving that conflict.

Contemporary findings can still be wrong

Giving earlier evidence greater weight does not mean treating official findings as sacred. A badly conducted investigation remains badly conducted regardless of its date. A contemporaneous record can contain assumptions, factual errors or information supplied by an unreliable witness. Authorities can also genuinely overlook homicide.

What chronology does is impose discipline on the comparison. A later theory should not be allowed to overwrite earlier evidence simply because the new story is more dramatic or because subsequent events make the deceased person’s research seem more consequential.

This problem becomes particularly acute when separate deaths are retrospectively assembled into a pattern. In 2026, Eskridge’s four-year-old death was newly incorporated into widely circulated lists of dead or missing scientists connected, with varying degrees of strength, to aerospace, nuclear, classified or UFO-related work. Once such a list exists, earlier events acquire a new interpretive frame. An ordinary obituary becomes the obituary of “one of the missing scientists”; an old remark about professional secrecy becomes a warning of assassination; a government connection becomes evidence of access to dangerous knowledge. None of those reinterpretations is necessarily false. The problem is that the pattern was created after the individual events and can therefore influence which details investigators and internet researchers choose to retrieve.

McDonald demonstrates the same process across a much longer interval. His public UFO disputes were well documented during his lifetime, and his death was documented in 1971. But the proposition that those two facts form a causal chain — he challenged UFO secrecy, therefore his death may have been an operation to silence him — is an interpretation added afterwards. It requires evidence for the missing causal steps.

What later claims must establish

A later assassination theory can overturn an earlier suicide conclusion. The date of the official finding does not grant it permanent immunity. But the newer claim becomes persuasive by explaining the older evidence, not by ignoring it.

For alleged researcher assassinations, three tests are particularly useful.

First, does the later evidence actually pre-date the death? An original letter, diary entry, email or message expressing fear before death is categorically different from a recollection first reported years later. Eskridge’s reported May 2022 message is potentially important for exactly this reason. Second, does it contradict a material part of the original finding? Evidence that a researcher was controversial, worked on unusual propulsion concepts or attracted government interest may explain why somebody could imagine a motive. It does not show that the physical circumstances of a death were staged. Stronger evidence would include independently verified inconsistencies in wound characteristics, weapon evidence, scene reconstruction, time of death, toxicology, access to the location, authenticated threats or documented interference with investigators.

Third, can the new theory explain the inconvenient contemporary evidence? In McDonald’s case, that includes an earlier self-inflicted gunshot and notes associated with the two incidents. A homicide hypothesis would need either to show that those records are substantially wrong or to explain why a murder followed a genuine previous suicide attempt. The same standard should be applied symmetrically. A suicide interpretation of Eskridge cannot simply dismiss an authenticated pre-death denial as irrelevant because it conflicts with the official ruling. Investigators would need to establish its context and authenticity and then consider it alongside behavioural, medical and forensic evidence. Conversely, assassination advocates cannot treat such a statement as proof that every subsequent suicide finding must have been fabricated.

Which evidence came first?

The most useful way to read suspicious-death claims in UFO and antigravity research is therefore to reconstruct the evidence in chronological layers.

For McDonald, the sequence strongly matters: established UFO advocacy and institutional controversy came first; a serious self-inflicted shooting and survival followed; then came the fatal shooting, a weapon and reported note, and a suicide ruling; much later, assassination interpretations increasingly connected his UFO conflicts and government files to his death. Eskridge’s sequence is more ambiguous. Her unconventional research and public comments about secrecy preceded her death. Messages now attributed to her — including an explicit denial that she would kill herself — also allegedly preceded it. That comparison shows why “official story versus conspiracy theory” is too crude a framework. The stronger question is: which specific claims can be traced to evidence created before or immediately after the death, and which entered the record only after an assassination narrative had formed?

In cases where the early record contains a documented previous suicide attempt, contemporaneous notes and physical findings consistent with suicide, later suspicions need unusually strong evidence to displace that cumulative picture. Where an apparently authentic pre-death communication specifically predicts a falsely reported suicide, the later disclosure deserves serious examination — but authentication and forensic corroboration remain necessary before it can overturn an official conclusion.

Chronology does not decide suspicious deaths automatically. It does something more useful: it prevents evidence that existed before the controversy from being silently rewritten by evidence selected after the controversy began.
