On 29 July 2021, two days after the recorded death and before the funeral, the Quad Cities Daily published a death notice for Ning Li of Madison, Alabama. The two notices are not fully independent in the journalistic sense: the local publication may simply have reproduced funeral-home information. It demonstrates that a mundane public record of Li’s death existed contemporaneously with the funeral.

Men told the newspaper that his mother had not defected to China or vanished from ordinary life. According to his account, she remained involved in US defence-related research, rejected an attempt by Chinese officials in 2008 to persuade her to return to China, and later suffered catastrophic injuries after being struck by a vehicle in 2014.
