Introduction
The most concrete motive pathway in Eugene Mallove’s killing begins not with cold fusion, UFOs or unconventional propulsion, but with a landlord–tenant dispute at 119 Salem Turnpike in Norwich, Connecticut. Mallove had recently evicted Roy and Patricia Anderson from the property and travelled there on 14 May 2004 to clear it out. Their son, Chad Schaffer, and his girlfriend, Candace Foster, had also lived there. The dispute developed over the house where Mallove had grown up. Investigative journalist David Kushner reported that Mallove rented the Norwich property in May 2003 to Patricia and Roy Anderson and their son Chad Schaffer for $1,000 a month. By early 2004, the arrangement had deteriorated. The Andersons missed rent in January and February, missed another payment in March, and were parking vehicles on the lawn; Mallove was concerned that the property was falling into disrepair. The later judicial record fixes the most important part of that chronology more firmly. The Connecticut Appellate Court’s 2025 decision in Brown v. Commissioner of Correction states that police determined Mallove had evicted Roy and Patricia Anderson the month before his death. It also confirms that Schaffer and Foster had lived at 119 Salem. This makes the physical setting of the homicide unusually significant. Mallove did not simply happen to encounter people connected with a former tenant somewhere else in Norwich. He died in the driveway of the very property from which the family had recently been evicted, while carrying out the post-eviction clean-up. There was nevertheless no immediate, straightforward solution. When police initially interviewed Schaffer, he said he had never met Mallove and claimed that his family had experienced no personal problems with him during the eviction. Why Schaffer and others returned to the property
The key development was not merely evidence that Schaffer resented an eviction. It was evidence identifying a specific trigger on the afternoon of the killing: possessions remaining at the former home were being discarded.
Foster’s later testimony, preserved in the 2025 appellate decision, was that Schaffer learned from his mother that someone at 119 Salem was “throwing things in a dumpster”. Schaffer was angry because he was supposed to have collected property still there, including possessions belonging to Foster. He then left their ArtSpace apartment. Kushner’s reconstruction provides additional detail from Detective James Curtis’s investigation. After the cold case was reopened, investigators revisited a photograph of the dumpster Mallove had been using during the clear-out. Curtis noticed a distinctive key chain on the grass that appeared not to have been present when the surrounding grass clippings were deposited. Foster subsequently identified the keys as Schaffer’s. When questioned again, Schaffer gave police a substantially different account from his original denial. According to Kushner, Schaffer said that a relative had seen Mallove disposing of belongings and alerted Patricia Anderson, who then telephoned her son and pressed him to go to the property and deal with what remained there. Schaffer said he brought his cousin Mozelle Brown with him to collect possessions. The judicial record supports the central mechanism without requiring acceptance of every detail of Schaffer’s own version: news about the belongings reached Schaffer; he was angry; he left for a period; and Foster said he returned with visibly bloody clothing. That is the crucial causal bridge. The eviction created the underlying conflict, but the immediate catalyst described in the evidence was the disposal of possessions left behind at the evicted property.
The second trip changed the appearance of the crime
The evidence also helps explain an initially confusing feature of the homicide: Mallove’s possessions and vehicle were taken, making robbery appear to be an obvious possibility.
According to Foster’s trial testimony as summarised by the Connecticut Appellate Court, after Schaffer returned to their apartment he told her she had to accompany him. Brown drove them to a fast-food restaurant behind 119 Salem, and they approached the former residence along a path they had used before. Foster testified that Mallove was still alive when they reached him and could be heard asking for help. Her account then described further violence. She said Schaffer removed Mallove’s wallet and other items, and that she was subsequently directed to participate in the assault. The stolen-property evidence did not end there. Foster said that a box at the apartment later contained Mallove’s wallet, digital camera and mobile phone, as well as the bloodstained basketball jersey Schaffer had been wearing. That distinction is important when reconstructing motive. Taking property after an assault does not necessarily mean obtaining Mallove’s wallet, camera or van was what originally brought the participants to Salem Turnpike. The evidence presented in the later case instead describes an initial journey prompted by the disposal of former tenants’ possessions, followed by an alleged effort to disguise what had happened by taking Mallove’s property.
The contemporary investigation understandably had to consider robbery. Why the property dispute compares differently with alternative motives
Mallove’s professional life inevitably encouraged another interpretation of his death. He was a prominent advocate for cold fusion and other unconventional-energy ideas, and his criticism of established scientific institutions had been unusually public. For anyone examining claims that scientists involved with unconventional energy, antigravity or related fields have died suspiciously, his murder therefore warrants careful scrutiny rather than dismissal by association.
But motive claims have to be compared according to the evidence connecting them to the crime.
