Introduction
The most useful way to reassess Amy Eskridge’s death is not to ask whether later accounts of threats “sound convincing”, but whether the physical and digital evidence supports the reported finding of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Public reporting says Eskridge died in Huntsville, Alabama, on 11 June 2022 and that her death was ruled a suicide. That makes several forensic questions decisive. The firearm and wound should establish whether the shot’s range and trajectory were mechanically compatible with self-infliction. Could the firearm and wound reconstruct the shooting?

Range of fire would be a major test. A pathologist can examine the entrance wound and surrounding tissue for soot, stippling from unburnt powder, muzzle effects and other characteristics associated with contact, near-contact or more distant firing. Laboratory comparison using the recovered firearm and the same or comparable ammunition can also help estimate muzzle-to-target distance from residue patterns. The key question is therefore not simply whether Eskridge suffered a gunshot wound to the head, as public reporting states, but exactly where the muzzle was relative to her head when the weapon discharged. What could residue, DNA and the scene establish?
Gunshot residue (GSR) testing of Eskridge’s hands and clothing would be relevant, but it would not provide a simple yes-or-no answer to whether she fired the weapon. GSR consists of residues produced when a firearm is discharged, and modern analysis examines microscopic particles and their chemical characteristics. Accordingly, a positive result on Eskridge’s hand would be consistent with firing a weapon but would need to be interpreted alongside proximity and transfer possibilities. Conversely, an absence of recoverable residue would not by itself establish that she did not fire it. What would be more informative is the complete distribution: residue on each hand, clothing and nearby surfaces; residue associated with the wound; and comparison with material generated experimentally from the recovered weapon and ammunition.
The firearm itself could carry another layer of evidence. Investigators could examine the grip, slide or cylinder, magazine, cartridges and other handled surfaces for fingerprints and DNA. Research shows that useful touch-DNA profiles can sometimes be recovered from firearms, but recovery is variable and mixtures can be difficult to interpret. That means neither “only Eskridge’s DNA was found” nor “someone else’s DNA was present” would automatically settle the case. A firearm can carry DNA from earlier legitimate handling, secondary transfer or multiple people, and the person who fires it does not invariably leave the strongest profile. The evidential value would depend on whose DNA appeared, where it appeared, how much was recovered and whether there was an innocent reason for that person to have handled the weapon.
The wider scene could be still more discriminating. Eskridge had also reportedly described break-ins, stalking and other harassment before her death. Those allegations do not prove that anybody entered her home on 11 June 2022. Toxicology and digital records could rebuild the final hours
Toxicology would address a different question: Eskridge’s physiological state when she died. A full post-mortem screen could potentially identify alcohol, prescribed medicines, illicit drugs, sedatives or other relevant substances and determine whether any findings were compatible with impairment or intoxication. But post-mortem concentrations cannot simply be read as a precise reconstruction of what a person had taken or how they were behaving. This is especially important because one of Eskridge’s reported pre-death messages specifically denied that she would intentionally overdose as well as denying an intention to kill herself. Relevant evidence might include doorbell or building cameras, neighbouring CCTV, vehicle sightings, access-control logs, Wi-Fi connections, phone-location information and contemporaneous photographs. Digital evidence also needs its own chain of custody. Public discussion of Eskridge’s death currently has the opposite problem: striking reported statements and allegations are widely available, while the underlying forensic record is not. Evidence supporting the existing suicide finding would include a wound and trajectory readily compatible with self-infliction; range-of-fire evidence matching that reconstruction; a weapon mechanically linked to the shot and plausibly positioned after discharge; no unexplained indications of forced entry or struggle; physical traces consistent with Eskridge handling the firearm; and a digital timeline showing no credible third party at the scene.
Evidence requiring serious reconsideration would include a wound trajectory or firing distance incompatible with the proposed position; unexplained third-party biological evidence in probative locations; physical indications that the scene had been altered; authenticated evidence placing another person at the scene; or contemporaneous digital records materially contradicting the recorded investigative timeline. Even those findings would have to be evaluated collectively, because individual anomalies can have innocent explanations.
The immediate evidential priority is therefore more basic than choosing between conspiracy and suicide.
