What George Men says actually happened

Men’s account, published in 2023, is unusually direct on the disputed point. According to the Huntsville Business Journal, he said that Li never went to China, never defected and never left her US defence work in the way the 2008 story implied. This testimony carries particular weight for the narrow question of Li’s physical whereabouts because Men was not attempting to reconstruct them from publication records or rumours among physicists. He was her son and described events in their family’s life. That does not independently prove every assertion concerning classified research, security clearances or the substance of her government work. It does, however, make his testimony substantially more relevant to the question “Did Ning Li move back to China?” than speculation from people who had lost contact with her.

There is also independent evidence anchoring Li and Men in Huntsville at the end of her life. That obituary alone would not establish where Li spent every year between 2003 and 2021. Combined with Men’s account, however, it fits a continuous American chronology much better than a permanent return to China. The family’s version places her in US defence work, then describes a 2014 road accident on the University of Alabama in Huntsville campus that caused permanent brain damage. The result is not that every mystery surrounding Li has been solved. The publicly available record remains sparse concerning precisely what she worked on after her last open scientific activity and what results, if any, came from that work. What the family testimony changes is much narrower but much firmer: an absence from public science should no longer be treated as evidence that she relocated to China.

Why the Chinese recruitment visit matters

The date is striking because it is the same year in which Sarfatti publicly claimed that Li had already returned to China. Men’s testimony therefore suggests a plausible route by which accurate information and erroneous inference could have become entangled. There may indeed have been Chinese interest in obtaining Li’s expertise. What the family account disputes is the crucial next step: that the approach succeeded.

Men supplied another family memory that runs against the image of a scientist voluntarily transferring herself to China. That episode should be treated as family testimony rather than an independently published government record: the available sources do not provide the travel application or official denial. Even so, within Men’s account it is significant. A woman supposedly living and working in China is difficult to reconcile with a contemporaneous family memory of her being in the United States and unable to obtain permission to visit China for her mother’s funeral.

What the family account does — and does not — establish

The China question is stronger when separated from broader claims about Li’s research. Some parts of her career are independently documented. Her 2003 appearance on the programme of the MITRE Gravitational-Wave Conference is recorded, with “Measurability of AC Gravity Fields” scheduled for 7 May. Men’s later statements add information that those records cannot provide: where his mother remained, the attempted Chinese recruitment and her rejection of it. In particular, it does not publicly establish that Li produced working antigravity technology, that classified US programmes successfully reproduced her proposed effects, or that every unexplained period in her professional record can be reconstructed from open sources.

Nor does overturning the China story require accepting those stronger claims. The question is historical rather than technological: which account best explains Li’s whereabouts after she ceased publishing? Here the evidence has changed materially since the 2008 allegation. The earlier story relied on second-hand information from someone who said Li was “allegedly” in China. That leaves a useful distinction for disappearance narratives involving scientists working around sensitive or speculative technologies. A person can disappear from public view without disappearing from their country, family or ordinary life. In Li’s case, the gap in publications was real, outsiders genuinely struggled to contact her, and Chinese officials apparently really were interested in recruiting her. Those facts made the defection story plausible enough to spread. They did not make it true.

The China claim after 2023

For the narrow question “Did Ning Li really return to China?”, the evidential balance now points strongly to no. The return-to-China narrative can be traced to a public allegation made during a period when Li’s activities were opaque. Ning Li’s case therefore becomes less mysterious when the propositions are kept separate. Her withdrawal from open research is documented. Chinese interest in recruiting her is reported by her son. Her later defence work is principally supported by testimony rather than publicly released programme records. But the specific story that she disappeared because she returned to China is contradicted by the person best positioned to know where she actually lived. The most defensible reconstruction is not that the China connection was invented from nothing, but that a real recruitment attempt was transformed, somewhere in the information gap surrounding Li, into a story that she had accepted it.
