That sequence substantially changes the evidential problem. McDonald’s surviving papers also matter to the broader historical record. Why prior intent matters when judging the fatal shooting

A previous suicide attempt is not logically conclusive proof about a later death. Someone who once attempted suicide could subsequently die by accident or homicide. The correct argument is therefore not that the April attempt proves what happened in June. It is that the attempt supplies powerful evidence that must be incorporated into any comparison of explanations.

The June circumstances then add evidence pointing in the same direction. McDonald was found dead on 13 June 1971 near the Cañada del Oro Wash outside Tucson. This evidence is categorically different from arguments based on McDonald’s professional biography. His scientific reputation establishes that he was not simply an uninformed UFO enthusiast: he was an accomplished atmospheric scientist whose UFO arguments deserved to be represented accurately. But professional credibility cannot be transferred from one proposition to another. Expertise in atmospheric physics does not make the proposition that he was murdered more probable, just as official hostility towards some of his UFO arguments does not itself demonstrate involvement in his death.

The distinction is especially important because McDonald really did encounter government attention. Surveillance, investigation and classification can establish that government agencies took an interest in a person. To establish murder, evidence must connect an actor to the death itself. Why homicide claims remain weaker

Modern suspicious-death narratives tend to reverse the evidential order. McDonald challenged official handling of UFO reports; government agencies possessed files concerning him; he died violently; therefore his death is presented as potentially part of a suppression operation.

There are also more elaborate claims about the mechanics of the fatal episode — for example, allegations concerning which side of McDonald’s head was wounded, how he obtained a weapon, or whether his physical condition should have prevented him reaching the location where he died. That source distinction matters. The strongest accessible evidence in this review establishes the prior attempt, the later firearm death, the presence of a note and the suicide ruling. The more elaborate murder scenario depends on later assertions for which equivalent primary forensic substantiation was not located.

What a homicide theory would still need

A serious homicide hypothesis would have to do more than establish motive in the abstract. McDonald had adversaries and publicly criticised the handling of UFO evidence; those facts might provide material from which a hypothetical motive could be constructed. They do not demonstrate that anyone acted on such a motive.

Evidence capable of materially changing the assessment could include authenticated police or coroner records contradicting the reported suicide reconstruction; forensic evidence inconsistent with a self-inflicted wound; reliable evidence that the firearm could not have been obtained or used by McDonald; credible witnesses placing another person at the scene; a documented threat specifically connected to his death; correspondence or agency records indicating an operation against him; evidence that the suicide notes were forged or misidentified; or a demonstrable impossibility in the established chronology.

That standard is deliberately stronger than asking whether some aspects of the story seem unusual. A homicide claim has to account for the evidence already pointing towards suicide, particularly the April attempt. It would need either to show that the earlier attempt itself has been badly misrepresented or explain why somebody murdered a man shortly after he had independently attempted to kill himself in substantially the same way.

The latter possibility is not impossible in a purely logical sense. It is simply evidentially demanding. A prior suicide attempt could conceivably make a later homicide easier to disguise, but proposing that scenario adds an additional assumption; it does not provide evidence for it. Without independent signs of intervention by another person, the earlier attempt increases rather than decreases the relative strength of the suicide explanation.

The credibility distinction McDonald’s case requires

McDonald’s case is particularly instructive in the history of alleged suppression of UFO researchers because two propositions that are often merged should remain separate. McDonald’s scientific seriousness is well supported. A claim that he was murdered because of his UFO work is not comparably supported.

Indeed, preserving that distinction does more justice to his historical significance than either extreme. It is unnecessary to dismiss McDonald as a scientist in order to reject an unsupported homicide allegation. The federal-interest argument also needs the same separation. On the presently accessible evidence, therefore, McDonald belongs in the history of scientists who became deeply involved in the UFO controversy and encountered institutional conflict. His inclusion in a list of allegedly suspicious researcher deaths can be documented as part of later UFO culture. What cannot presently be justified is treating the homicide interpretation as evidentially equal to the documented suicide interpretation. The April 1971 attempt is the decisive reason: it supplies direct evidence of recent suicidal intent and behaviour before the fatal June shooting, whereas the suppression theory still lacks comparably direct evidence connecting another actor to his death.
