Can Very Different Deaths Really Prove One Cause?
Suicides, accidents, illnesses and locally motivated homicides do not become a coherent suppression pattern merely by being counted together.

Introduction
The strongest objection to a single “suppression” theory linking deaths around UFO, antigravity and advanced-aerospace research is not simply that individual cases have alternative explanations. It is that the cases often belong to fundamentally different causal categories: suicide, apparently ordinary death, locally motivated homicide, disappearance in difficult terrain, and cases whose cause remains genuinely unresolved.
That matters because a common cause should normally make the evidence more coherent as cases accumulate. Instead, some widely circulated scientist lists become less coherent when examined case by case. A murder tied by investigators to a particular offender is not the same evidential event as a suicide; neither is equivalent to an unexplained disappearance. Putting all of them into one running total can therefore create an impressive number while concealing the central question: what mechanism could actually have produced all those different outcomes?
Why unlike deaths should be analysed separately
A useful distinction is between cause, manner and mechanism. The US National Center for Health Statistics defines an underlying cause of death as the disease, injury or circumstances that initiated the fatal chain of events. Those distinctions are especially important when evaluating claims about researchers allegedly being eliminated. If one hypothesis is supposed to explain several deaths, simply showing that every victim had some connection to aerospace, nuclear science or unconventional research is insufficient. The hypothesis must also explain why the supposed operation repeatedly manifests through unrelated-looking processes.
Recent cases illustrate the problem particularly clearly.
MIT physicist Nuno Loureiro, for example, was murdered at his home in December 2025. Early reporting understandably left the motive uncertain, which allowed his death to be incorporated into broader speculation about endangered scientists. Subsequent investigation produced much more specific evidence. Authorities linked Loureiro’s killing to Claudio Neves Valente, the perpetrator of the Brown University mass shooting. The FBI later said Valente had accumulated personal grievances over years; investigators conducted more than 260 interviews and examined extensive digital evidence. MIT consequently described Loureiro’s death in the context of the identified individual responsible for both his murder and the Brown killings.[MIT News]news.mit.eduMIT NewsStatement on Professor Nuno Loureiro | MIT News | Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyDecember 19, 2025… That development does not make the murder less shocking. It changes what the murder can reasonably demonstrate about a wider scientist-suppression theory. A case with an identified offender and a separately investigated grievance history no longer functions in the same way as a genuinely unexplained assassination.
The killing of Caltech astrophysicist Carl Grillmair likewise has a concrete criminal investigation attached to it. Grillmair was shot outside his home in Llano, California, in February 2026. Authorities arrested Freddy Snyder and charged him with Grillmair’s murder as well as offences connected with a nearby carjacking; reporting also described Snyder’s previous encounter with Grillmair’s property.[People.com]people.comHe was known for his groundbreaking research on distant planets, including a 2007 study on the presence of water outside our solar system…
A prosecution does not by itself settle every question about motive, nor should an unresolved detail automatically be treated as proof of a larger plot. The important analytical point is narrower: investigators have a particular alleged offender and a local sequence of events to examine. A theory claiming that Grillmair was killed because of sensitive scientific knowledge must outperform that case-specific explanation with affirmative evidence, rather than merely counting his death alongside other researchers.
At the opposite end of the spectrum are cases where the public record does not establish a suspicious death at all. Planetary scientist Michael David Hicks, sometimes included in circulating lists, died in July 2023 aged 59. Memorials from the American Astronomical Society’s Division for Planetary Sciences and the University of Arizona describe his long JPL career and his work on comets, asteroids, DART, Dawn and Deep Space 1, but do not publicly specify a cause of death.[dps.aas.org]dps.aas.orgmichael david hicksmichael david hicks
“No publicly stated cause” is an information gap. It is not itself a cause of death, much less evidence of homicide. Treating undisclosed, uncertain and suspicious as interchangeable silently moves a case from “we do not know from the available record” to “something unexplained happened”, and then from “unexplained” to “possibly connected”. Each step adds an inference that the underlying evidence does not automatically supply.
One list can contain several different stories
The case of antigravity researcher Amy Eskridge shows why disputed cases require particularly careful separation from undisputed homicides. Eskridge died in Huntsville, Alabama, in June 2022 aged 34. There is therefore a legitimate evidential question about how much weight to give the official finding, Eskridge’s earlier statements and the available investigative record. But that question is different from the Loureiro case, where authorities identified an attacker, and different again from a case in which no cause has been publicly specified.
The distinction becomes even clearer with disappearances. Monica Reza, a JPL materials scientist, disappeared while hiking in the Angeles National Forest in June 2025. Search teams looked for her in difficult mountain terrain, and a beanie believed to be hers was reportedly located hundreds of feet below the trail. Melissa Casias, meanwhile, demonstrates how the status of a supposed cluster member can change as new evidence arrives. That is precisely why “missing scientist” totals should not be treated as a stable evidential category. A disappearance can later resolve into an accident, suicide, homicide or natural death, while some cases remain undetermined. Until the underlying mechanism is established, disappearance describes the investigator’s state of knowledge, not the cause of the event.
What signatures should one common cause produce?
None of this means that different-looking deaths could never share a hidden cause. An organised campaign could conceivably use different methods precisely to avoid detection. Espionage and homicide investigations cannot assume that genuine conspirators will conveniently repeat an identical technique.
But that possibility creates a demanding evidential requirement. If every difference can be explained as deliberate disguise, then the theory risks becoming impossible to falsify: similarity proves coordination, while dissimilarity also proves coordination because the perpetrators supposedly wanted the cases to look different.
A serious common-cause theory therefore needs independent recurring signatures. Depending on the allegation, those might include repeated contact with the same person or organisation, common threats documented before the deaths, a shared compromised project, matching forensic anomalies, unusual financial transactions, communications linking suspects across jurisdictions, repeated access to victims’ homes or devices, or a demonstrable pattern of targeting people possessing the same narrowly defined information.
The recurring feature must be more specific than “worked somewhere connected with advanced technology”. The contemporary lists themselves illustrate why. Loureiro researched plasma and fusion; Grillmair was an astrophysicist whose published work included stellar streams and exoplanet-related astronomy; Hicks studied comets and asteroids; Casias held an administrative position at Los Alamos; Reza worked in aerospace materials.[arxiv.org]arxiv.orgOpen source on arxiv.org.
The occupational umbrella can therefore become broad enough to cover nuclear physics, astronomy, planetary science, aerospace engineering, laboratory administration and military work. Once the definition of both who counts and what sort of adverse event counts expands simultaneously, the resulting total becomes easier to enlarge without producing a correspondingly stronger causal pattern.
This is the key difference between a thematic resemblance and an investigative signature. “These people had interesting technical backgrounds” is a thematic resemblance. “These victims received communications from the same identifiable source immediately before similar interference with their work” would be a potentially testable signature.
How the count rises while coherence falls
The paradox of these lists is that adding cases can make the story feel stronger while making the causal hypothesis weaker.
Suppose an initial set contains three researchers killed by the same unusual method after receiving similar threats. A fourth case with the same signature would strengthen the pattern substantially. But now imagine expanding the set by adding a researcher who died by suicide, another whose cause of death was never publicly disclosed, an administrator who disappeared, an astrophysicist allegedly murdered by a local offender, and someone lost during an outdoor activity. The number has grown from three to eight, yet the additional cases have not necessarily strengthened the original mechanism.
They may have diluted it.
That is why CDC injury-investigation guidance treats manner of death as analytically meaningful. Investigators may sometimes study several manners together when there is an independently specified common mechanism — the CDC gives drug poisoning as an example — but the mechanism provides the reason for grouping them.[CDC]cdc.govother injuryother injury In other words, investigators do not normally infer a mechanism merely because heterogeneous deaths have first been assembled into a list.
The same discipline is useful here. If the proposed mechanism is assassination, confirmed accidents and well-supported suicides should not automatically count towards it. If the proposed mechanism is induced suicide, ordinary homicides by identifiable local offenders require a separate explanation. If the proposed mechanism is abduction, unresolved wilderness disappearances may be relevant only if evidence distinguishes them from the ordinary hazards that generate missing-person cases. If the claim expands into a general programme capable of causing murders, suicides, accidents, illnesses and disappearances at will, the evidential threshold should rise rather than fall.
Otherwise almost any subsequent tragedy involving someone with a sufficiently broad connection to aerospace or advanced science becomes confirmatory.
Unresolved cases still deserve investigation
Rejecting premature unification does not require pretending that every individual case is solved. Some contain genuine unanswered questions. The disappearance of Monica Reza remains striking precisely because an extensive search did not locate her. Casias’s discovery changed her case from a disappearance to an unresolved death investigation, rather than instantly settling its circumstances. Those gaps are legitimate reasons for further case-specific investigation. They are not automatically evidence that the gaps have the same cause.
This distinction also protects potentially significant evidence from being weakened by association. If one researcher really did receive credible threats because of sensitive work, that allegation deserves examination on its own documentary merits. Adding unrelated deaths does not strengthen the threat evidence. It may instead bury the strongest case beneath weaker ones.
The broader scientist narrative that attracted federal and congressional attention in 2026 illustrates the tension. Reporting described authorities examining whether connections existed, while also stressing that no coordinated link had been established. The harder test is causal coherence
The useful question is therefore not, “How many UFO-, antigravity- or aerospace-adjacent people can be placed on a list of deaths and disappearances?” It is, “After each event is classified by its own evidence, what unexplained pattern remains?”
That procedure can produce a much smaller number. Known or strongly supported local homicides belong in one category. Suicides belong in another unless there is independent evidence of coercion or staging. Accidents and natural deaths require their own evidence. Missing persons should remain missing-person cases until their circumstances become clearer. Deaths for which the public record gives no cause should be labelled unknown rather than suspicious by default.
Only after that separation should investigators look across categories for evidence strong enough to reunite them.
That is a tougher test for a one-cause suppression theory, but also a fairer one. A genuine coordinated campaign should ultimately leave something more specific than the fact that its supposed victims worked in interesting fields and met tragic ends. It should generate recurring, independently verifiable links that survive the very different documented circumstances of the individual cases.
Without those links, a rising body count can be visually dramatic while the causal case underneath it becomes progressively less coherent.
