Yet Vallée apparently did not want the book marketed by trading on his university connection. That choice is particularly revealing because it involved something Vallée could control. He was not hiding the existence of his book or publishing anonymously; he was limiting the institutional signalling surrounding it. Neither episode establishes institutional retaliation. Nor does Sagan’s reluctance prove that fear of stigma was his motivation; an author can decline a book endorsement for many reasons. What the combination does demonstrate more securely is a difference between private intellectual engagement and public professional association. Vallée himself was willing to publish, but cautious about attaching Northwestern to that publication; Sagan could apparently respond positively in private without agreeing to make that approval part of the book’s public presentation.

Historical scholarship places that pattern within a wider boundary problem in twentieth-century UFO research. Interest is not belief, and willingness to examine evidence is not endorsement of an extraterrestrial or any other hypothesis. What Vallée’s caution actually demonstrates
Within the history of professional stigma surrounding scientific UFO investigation, Vallée is valuable because his case documents self-protective behaviour rather than requiring an inference from some later career setback. A young scientist publishing seriously about UFOs deliberately chose not to advertise his Northwestern affiliation and avoided presenting himself as a crusading public advocate.
