How six years of caregiving fill the missing chronology
The significance of Men’s account becomes clearer when it is compared with the older “disappearance” narrative. Li had indeed become extremely difficult for outsiders to follow. The Huntsville Business Journal found that her public publication trail largely stopped after the early 2000s, although she was still presenting related research at a 2003 gravitational-wave conference. What the caregiving account resolves — and what it does not
Men’s chronology resolves the most literal version of the Ning Li disappearance story much more effectively than it resolves the secrecy surrounding her scientific work. The distinction is essential in assessing allegations involving UFO, advanced-propulsion or antigravity researchers. A person can disappear from journals, conferences and colleagues’ address books without disappearing from ordinary life.
For Li, the public scientific gap was real enough to invite speculation. Those are separate questions. Nor does evidence that she suffered an accident in 2014 explain every poorly documented year between her early-2000s public withdrawal and that accident.
What it does change is the evidential status of the word “missing”. By Men’s account, the researcher who had become mysterious to the internet was, during her final six years, a severely impaired mother being cared for by her son in Alabama. The defensible remaining question is narrower: what happened in the poorly documented portion of her research career before the 2014 accident? George Men’s caregiving chronology does not answer that question, but it removes the need to turn Li’s final years themselves into an unexplained disappearance.
