That distinction matters because discussion of Eskridge’s death has sometimes treated the absence of a publicly inspectable certificate as evidence that her records were specially “sealed”. The available evidence does not establish that. Alabama’s restriction applies generally to recent deaths, regardless of whether a case is controversial, mundane or connected to unconventional research. The resulting lack of public access is a genuine limitation on independent verification, but it should be described as a statutory evidence gap rather than evidence of exceptional secrecy.
Alabama’s 25-year confidentiality rule
The controlling rule is unusually clear. The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), which maintains the state’s vital records through its Center for Health Statistics, states that death certificates are confidential and access-restricted for 25 years from the date of death. This is not merely an administrative preference. Section 22-9A-21(f) of the Code of Alabama provides that when 25 years have elapsed after a death, records of that event in the State Registrar’s custody become “nonrestricted public records”. This also provides a useful control case for claims about secrecy. The same obstacle would confront a stranger requesting the certificate of almost anyone else who died in Alabama in 2022. Public unavailability is therefore an expected feature of Alabama’s vital-records system, not by itself an anomaly specific to Eskridge.
Who can obtain a restricted certificate?
“Confidential” does not mean that nobody can obtain the record. Alabama instead operates a restricted-access system in which particular people with recognised relationships or legal interests may request certified copies during the 25-year period.
ADPH currently identifies eligible requesters as the deceased person’s mother or father, husband or wife, son or daughter, sister or brother, an entitled grandchild, a legal representative of the family or estate, and the informant named on the death certificate. Alabama’s administrative rules add further detail. An executor or administrator of the deceased person’s estate may obtain certified copies, as may the informant listed on the certificate. Government agencies may obtain vital records needed for official duties, while somebody who is themselves entitled to a certificate may provide written authorisation for another person to collect it. That arrangement creates an important difference between private availability and public availability. Eskridge’s certificate can exist, be routinely accessible to authorised relatives or representatives, and remain unavailable to an independent journalist or UFO researcher. Those facts are perfectly compatible. A search that fails because the requester is not eligible does not demonstrate that authorities have removed the certificate from ordinary channels.
Nor does restricted public access establish what the certificate says. It would be equally unsound to infer either homicide or suicide merely from the access rule. Why “not public” is different from “specially sealed”
This distinction becomes particularly important in Eskridge’s case because later discussion has attached considerable significance to missing or unavailable official documentation. Her death has received renewed attention alongside allegations concerning researchers associated with UFOs, unconventional propulsion and other sensitive technologies. Against that background, language such as “sealed death certificate” can sound much more significant than it is. There are at least three materially different propositions:

The general public cannot obtain Eskridge’s death certificate. This is supported by Alabama’s ordinary 25-year restriction. Alabama Department of Public Health
- Eskridge’s certificate has been subjected to an exceptional restriction beyond the rule governing other recent Alabama deaths. The sources reviewed here do not establish this.
- Authorities specially restricted the certificate in order to conceal evidence about her death or research. The routine confidentiality rule provides no evidence for that much stronger claim.
Conflating those propositions converts an ordinary legal restriction into apparent evidence of a cover-up. That is precisely the kind of inference that should be avoided when assessing suspicious-death claims.
The wording of Alabama law is especially useful here because it provides a testable alternative explanation for the document’s absence. One need not speculate about why a 2022 death certificate is missing from public databases: the state says that certificates remain restricted for 25 years. Any claim of special sealing therefore needs evidence over and above the fact that the public cannot obtain the certificate.
There is also an instructive comparison within Alabama’s own vital-records system. Marriage and divorce certificates held by the State Registrar are expressly treated as nonrestricted public records, whereas birth and death records have defined confidentiality periods. What the restriction does and does not prevent researchers from establishing
The confidentiality rule nevertheless has a real evidential consequence. A death certificate is a primary government record, and an independent researcher who is not an eligible requester cannot currently inspect Eskridge’s certificate to check exactly how the state recorded such particulars as cause and manner of death. Public discussion must consequently distinguish between information reproduced in reporting and information personally verified against the underlying vital record.
That distinction is especially relevant because recent secondary coverage commonly states that Eskridge’s death was ruled a suicide involving a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A careful account should therefore attribute the determination rather than imply that every reader can independently retrieve and inspect the vital record.
At the same time, inability to inspect the certificate does not make contrary theories more probable. A missing piece of publicly accessible evidence is not positive evidence for the alternative explanation. Alabama’s law supplies an independent administrative reason for this particular gap.
It is also important not to treat “the death certificate” as synonymous with the entire death investigation. A vital record, an autopsy or medical-examiner file, and a police investigative file are different records governed by different procedures. Establishing why the death certificate is unavailable does not establish why every other possible record concerning Eskridge’s death has or has not been released. Claims about those other documents require separate analysis rather than being folded into the 25-year vital-records rule.
The evidential lesson from Eskridge’s case
Within the wider debate about allegedly suspicious deaths among UFO and antigravity researchers, Eskridge’s death illustrates why absence from the public record must be classified before it is interpreted. A document may be unavailable because it never existed, because it has been lost, because an agency withheld it under an applicable exemption, because a court specifically sealed it, or simply because legislation makes that entire class of records confidential for a fixed period. Those explanations have very different evidential implications.
For Eskridge’s death certificate, the last explanation is directly supported by Alabama law. That does not resolve the broader controversy surrounding her death. It resolves a narrower but important question: the present public unavailability of Amy Eskridge’s Alabama death certificate is expected under ordinary state law and, standing alone, is not evidence that officials specially sealed her record.
The appropriate evidential position is therefore neither to dismiss questions about Eskridge’s death nor to treat routine confidentiality as confirmation of suspicious circumstances. Until an authorised copy enters the public record or the statutory restriction expires, the certificate remains a piece of primary evidence that most independent observers cannot examine. That is a legitimate limitation on public verification — but it is a limitation created by a general Alabama rule, not demonstrated evidence of exceptional secrecy in Amy Eskridge’s case.
