Introduction

Eugene Mallove is a useful case for understanding how lists of allegedly suppressed scientists drift between research fields. His public reputation was built chiefly around cold fusion: after working as MIT’s chief science writer, he became an outspoken defender of the disputed Fleischmann–Pons claims, wrote Fire from Ice, founded Infinite Energy and campaigned for what he called “new energy” research. Contemporary institutional and biographical accounts still describe him primarily in those terms.[infinite-energy.com]infinite-energy.comInfinite EnergyGene Mallove, BiographyGene's Pulitzer-nominated book Fire from Ice: Searching for the Truth Behind the Cold Fusion Furor…

Yet describing Mallove simply as a cold-fusion advocate also misses part of the story. He had an earlier professional interest in advanced space propulsion, and during his later alternative-energy years he personally investigated claims of gravity modification and proposed antigravity devices. Those genuine connections subsequently made it easy for suppression narratives to move him into a much broader category of “antigravity”, advanced-propulsion or UAP-related researchers. The crucial distinction is that Mallove’s interests broadened during his lifetime, while later lists broadened his identity even further.[eugenemallove.com]eugenemallove.comEugene Mallove Quest for Life and Knowledge 2.6As an astronautical engineer with training from MIT, and author of The Starflight Handbook…Read more…

Mallove’s career was centred on cold fusion, not antigravity

Mallove had credentials that made the later category shift superficially plausible. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from MIT and a doctorate in environmental health sciences from Harvard. Before becoming identified with alternative energy, he worked in engineering and science communication and co-authored The Starflight Handbook with Gregory Matloff. The Planetary Society describes that work as covering proposed methods of interstellar travel including solar sails, laser propulsion, ramjets and exotic fuels.[The Planetary Society]planetary.orgThe Planetary Society Eugene Mallove | The Planetary SocietyThe Planetary Society Eugene Mallove | The Planetary Society

That aerospace background should not, however, be retroactively equated with antigravity research. Solar sails, laser propulsion and ramjets are propulsion concepts that do not require cancelling or manipulating gravity. Even The Starflight Handbook, despite its speculative subject, ranged across possible technologies for interstellar travel rather than establishing Mallove as an experimental gravity researcher.[The Planetary Society]planetary.orgThe Planetary Society Eugene Mallove | The Planetary SocietyThe Planetary Society Eugene Mallove | The Planetary Society

The decisive change in his public career followed the 1989 cold-fusion controversy. Mallove was working in the MIT News Office when Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons announced that electrochemical experiments involving palladium and heavy water had produced anomalous heat which they attributed to nuclear processes. Mallove became convinced that cold fusion had been rejected unfairly and accused MIT researchers of mishandling or altering the presentation of calorimetry results. He subsequently left MIT and published Fire from Ice: Searching for the Truth Behind the Cold Fusion Furor in 1991. MIT’s own Plasma Science and Fusion Center library catalogue identifies him straightforwardly as a former MIT News Office employee and “cf[cold fusion]metaresearch.orgAntigravity ResearchAntigravity Research proponent”.[MIT Plasma Library]library.psfc.mit.eduPlasma Library VideosMIT Plasma LibraryVideos - PSFC Library - MITReviews history of cold fusion and interviews cf proponent Eugene Mallove, formerly of the M…

His institutional activity reinforced that identity. Mallove founded the magazine that became Infinite Energy, whose surviving website describes itself as an international magazine for “Cold Fusion and New Energy Technologies”. Its archives are heavily populated with cold-fusion experimental reports, theoretical discussions and Mallove’s interventions in disputes over low-energy nuclear reactions.[Infinite Energy]infinite-energy.comInfinite Energy Issue 34 Table of ContentsInfinite Energy Issue 34 Table of Contents

This is why a historically ordered description would normally call Mallove a science writer, aerospace-trained engineer and cold-fusion/new-energy advocate before calling him an antigravity researcher.

Antigravity nevertheless entered Mallove’s own interests

The field drift was not invented entirely after his death. By the early 2000s, Mallove’s “new energy” interests had widened far beyond cold fusion. This is the most important qualification when assessing his later appearance on antigravity lists.

A collection of Mallove’s correspondence and writings assembled by Paulo and Alexandra Correa explicitly contains a section called “The search for anti-gravitational devices”. In the surviving material, Mallove referred to work on “gravity, antigravity and inertia” and connected the subject with his longstanding interest in spacecraft propulsion. In one passage he wrote that, as an MIT-trained astronautical engineer and co-author of The Starflight Handbook, he was excited by what he thought might represent an emerging new form of space propulsion.[Eugene Mallove]eugenemallove.comOpen source on eugenemallove.com.

There is stronger evidence than merely a passing editorial interest. In a June 2001 letter concerning work by the Correas, Mallove recalled visiting their laboratory in August 2000 and witnessing what he described as an apparently substantial antigravity effect involving a small piece of gold foil. The letter records his interpretation of the demonstration; it does not independently establish that an antigravity effect actually occurred. But it does demonstrate that Mallove himself was investigating and taking seriously an experimental claim framed explicitly as antigravity.[Aether Energy]aetherenergy.commallove letter1Aether EnergyEugene Mallove letter, June 2001…Published: June 2001

His editorial interests extended into related territory as well. A later technical monograph on the Brown–Biefeld effect — an electrostatic phenomenon frequently discussed in antigravity circles — says an earlier version had originally been intended for publication in Infinite Energy at Mallove’s personal request. This further shows that gravity-control claims had entered the orbit of the magazine during his editorship rather than being attached to him solely by posthumous writers.[SciSpace]scispace.comOpen source on scispace.com.

The distinction is therefore finer than “Mallove had nothing to do with antigravity”. He did. But his involvement was part of a late-career expansion into a broad alternative-physics ecosystem, alongside cold fusion and other unconventional energy claims. His primary public campaign remained cold fusion and “new energy”; antigravity was one neighbouring line of inquiry within that much wider programme.[Infinite Energy]infinite-energy.comInfinite EnergyGene Mallove, BiographyGene's Pulitzer-nominated book Fire from Ice: Searching for the Truth Behind the Cold Fusion Furor…

“New energy” became the bridge between otherwise different fields

Mallove’s own terminology helps explain why the categories became easy to merge. Infinite Energy was not conceived simply as a specialist cold-fusion journal. Its remit expanded towards unconventional energy technologies and disputed physical effects generally. The surviving magazine describes itself using the paired formulation “Cold Fusion and New Energy Technologies”, while its back catalogue ranges well outside one experimental phenomenon.[Infinite Energy]infinite-energy.comOpen source on infinite-energy.com.

That broad umbrella changes the logic of classification. Once the relevant category is no longer “people who experimentally researched gravity modification”, Mallove fits readily into several progressively larger groups:

Cold fusion researcher or advocate → alternative-energy researcher → unconventional-physics researcher → advanced-propulsion researcher → suppressed-technology figure.

Each step has some biographical basis, but the first and last categories are not interchangeable. Someone interested in cold fusion is not therefore an antigravity scientist; someone who investigated an antigravity claim is not therefore a UFO researcher.

Mallove’s case is unusually susceptible to this expansion because several authentic strands of his biography point in neighbouring directions. His MIT training was in astronautical engineering; he wrote about interstellar propulsion; his post-MIT career centred on controversial energy research; he explicitly investigated an alleged antigravity effect; and he argued that scientific institutions could suppress unconventional discoveries. Those ingredients make a coherent biography. They can also be rearranged into a much more sweeping narrative in which “advanced energy”, “propulsion”, “antigravity” and eventually UAP technology appear to constitute one research field.[planetary.org]planetary.orgThe Planetary Society Eugene Mallove | The Planetary SocietyThe Planetary Society Eugene Mallove | The Planetary Society

That last step is interpretative rather than scientific. None of those labels establishes that cold fusion, gravity modification and purported UAP propulsion share a common physical mechanism.

His murder made the category drift more consequential

Mallove’s death supplied the element that transformed an unusual research career into a recurring suppression narrative. On 14 May 2004, he was killed while working at a rental property in Norwich, Connecticut. The Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection recorded the death as a homicide and, while the investigation remained unresolved, offered a $50,000 reward. Police documentation also recorded missing personal property and a stolen van.[CT.gov]portal.ct.gov50000 reward being offered from homicide investigation norwich 200450000 reward being offered from homicide investigation norwich 2004

The long period before successful prosecutions left considerable room for speculation about whether Mallove had been killed because of his work. That interpretation circulated within alternative-energy communities, where his disputes with scientific institutions and belief in potentially revolutionary technologies already provided a ready suppression narrative.[Project Camelot]projectcamelot.orgOpen source on projectcamelot.org.

Later criminal proceedings produced a much more mundane evidential account. Chad Schaffer pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, while Mozzelle Brown was convicted of murder and conspiracy and received a 58-year sentence. Reporting on the case tied the confrontation to the rental property and people associated with former tenants rather than to Mallove’s scientific activities. A 2025 Connecticut appellate decision still recounts the criminal case on that basis, beginning with Mallove’s body being discovered at his Norwich rental property.[nbcconnecticut.com]nbcconnecticut.comman found guilty in norwich physicist murder caseman found guilty in norwich physicist murder case

This does not make the murder less real or less violent. It changes what can responsibly be inferred from it. There is strong evidence that Mallove was murdered; there is evidence that he believed unconventional energy research encountered institutional resistance; there is evidence that he explored antigravity claims. What is missing is credible evidence connecting his killers to cold fusion, antigravity research, UFO technology or a programme for suppressing his scientific work.

Later lists turn a secondary interest into a defining label

The clearest evidence for category drift comes from comparing Mallove’s established biography with later UAP-oriented lists.

A recent site devoted explicitly to alleged murders of UAP researchers includes Mallove in its database. Significantly, even that page describes him first as a cold-fusion advocate, science writer and editor of Infinite Energy and acknowledges that his murder was ultimately connected to a robbery rather than his research. Yet the same page then places him within a wider “UAP Energy Systems Murders” framework and cites a social-media claim linking an “Eugene” to independent discovery of antigravity.[Murdering UAP Experts]uapmurders.comMurdering UAP Experts Eugene Mallove | Murdering UAP ExpertsMurdering UAP Experts Eugene Mallove | Murdering UAP Experts

The contrast illustrates the mechanism almost perfectly: the underlying biography remains recognisably Mallove’s, but the container around the biography has changed.

The same process is visible in contemporary online compilations. A 2026 UFO-scientist list places Mallove alongside figures identified with UFO investigation and alleged antigravity work. Its own description of Mallove nevertheless says simply that he “was known for his work on Cold Fusion”. In other words, the list does not demonstrate that he belonged to the same research speciality as its other entries; membership itself supplies the implied connection.[Reddit]reddit.comOpen source on reddit.com.

This matters because lists create meaning through proximity. A reader encountering Mallove between UFO investigators and gravity researchers can easily infer that all of them were pursuing different parts of one secret technology programme. But the inference is much stronger than the biographical evidence.

There is also evidence that the association began forming very soon after Mallove’s death. A memorial page reproduces commentary from Tim Ventura of American Antigravity which explicitly moves from Mallove’s cold-fusion work to antigravity as another member of the same family of elusive “new technologies”. That is an unusually clear contemporary example of how the bridge was constructed: not by claiming that cold fusion literally was antigravity, but by treating both as adjacent technologies struggling for recognition and commercial reality.[greatdreams.com]greatdreams.comDr. Eugene MalloveDr. Eugene Mallove

Mallove Drift illustration 3
Explanatory illustration 3

The more accurate classification is layered, not binary

Mallove therefore should neither be removed entirely from the history of antigravity enthusiasm nor treated as though gravity control defined his scientific career. Both versions flatten the evidence.

The historically defensible description has several layers. He began with genuine aerospace and astronautical interests, including speculative interstellar propulsion. He then became publicly identified above all with cold fusion and subsequently built an organisation and magazine around a broader “new energy” programme. Within that broader programme he investigated unconventional physics, including explicit antigravity claims. After his murder, communities concerned with suppressed technology increasingly treated those different strands as parts of one larger story.[planetary.org]planetary.orgThe Planetary Society Eugene Mallove | The Planetary SocietyThe Planetary Society Eugene Mallove | The Planetary Society

That sequence is important for assessing alleged suspicious-death lists. A list headed “cold fusion and alternative-energy advocates” can include Mallove without substantial category distortion. A list headed “researchers interested in unconventional energy and propulsion” can also include him, provided the breadth of the category is made explicit. Calling him simply an “antigravity scientist” is much less precise. Calling his murder evidence of the suppression of antigravity or UFO propulsion goes further still and requires evidence that the documented criminal case does not provide.[NBC Connecticut]nbcconnecticut.comman found guilty in norwich physicist murder caseman found guilty in norwich physicist murder case

Mallove’s case consequently shows how research-field drift can happen without any single outright fabrication. Real facts provide every link in the chain: astronautical engineering, interstellar propulsion, cold fusion advocacy, unconventional energy, an interest in alleged antigravity effects, institutional-suppression claims and finally a violent death. The distortion arises when association is converted into equivalence and the intermediate distinctions disappear.

For the wider history of alleged suppressed scientists, that is the central lesson of the Mallove case. The important question is not simply whether his name belongs on a list. It is what the list claims to be a list of.
