For years, Ning Li’s retreat from public scientific life was repeatedly described as a literal disappearance: the antigravity researcher had supposedly vanished after US defence funding, defected to China, been removed into a secret programme, or otherwise become unreachable under suspicious circumstances. The most important challenge to that story arrived in 2023, when her son, George Guangyu Men, gave the Huntsville Business Journal a detailed account of what had happened to her. Men’s account does not resolve every question about Li’s classified research. It does something narrower but more consequential for the disappearance story: it replaces an inference from public silence with a family chronology. What George Men said happened to his mother
The Huntsville Business Journal found Men through an unusually mundane clue: Li’s obituary. Berryhill Funeral Home in Huntsville recorded that Ning Li died on 27 July 2021 and identified Dr George Men as her surviving son. The journalist, Noah Logan, subsequently located Men and interviewed him at his home. His account divides Li’s supposedly missing years into two very different periods.
First came classified work. Men said his mother continued working for the US Department of Defense and obtained a top-secret security clearance. He remembered a striking change from her university career: whereas Li had previously enjoyed publishing her results, she became unable to discuss what she was doing. The second period began with a medical catastrophe. Men told the newspaper that in 2014 Li was struck by a vehicle while crossing a street on the University of Alabama in Huntsville campus. The collision caused permanent brain damage and was followed by an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. She did not return to work. Her husband, who witnessed the collision, suffered a heart attack at the scene and died the following year. That sequence fundamentally changes the meaning of the long public silence. On Men’s account, there was no single event in which Li mysteriously disappeared. Her visibility instead declined first because her work became classified and later because severe injuries ended her working life.
There is independent contemporary evidence for the final point in the chronology. The defection story versus Men’s account
The most important contradiction concerns China. A major source of the defection narrative was physicist Jack Sarfatti, whose 2008 remarks were later amplified in popular treatments of Li’s disappearance. Men gave a substantially different account. He said Li never went back to China and never defected. There was, however, a real China-related episode that could help explain how a distorted version of events arose.
According to Men, Chinese officials visiting the United States in 2008 sought Li out and wanted her to return to China. She refused. Men also recalled that when Li’s mother subsequently died in China, Li wanted to travel there for the funeral but the US government did not permit the trip. That distinction is unusually important in assessing the myth. The competing stories contain some overlapping elements — China, government interest, secrecy and difficulty contacting Li — but arrange them into opposite narratives:
- The disappearance version: Li became unreachable, apparently returned to China and may have taken sensitive knowledge with her.
- Men’s version: Chinese representatives wanted Li to return, she declined, and she remained tied to classified US defence work.

The obituary alone cannot establish that Li never travelled abroad at any point, but it strongly undermines the more dramatic versions in which she permanently vanished into China. Men’s first-hand account directly rejects that proposition.
Evidence of life after the supposed disappearance
Men’s testimony did not appear in a complete evidential vacuum. An important earlier fragment had circulated for years and is broadly consistent with his story.
An archived 2013 webpage reproduces what it identifies as a June 2004 email from physicist Eugene Podkletnov to researcher Tim Ventura. In it, Podkletnov reportedly said that Li was “all right”, was working for the Department of Defense and could not discuss her work openly. More significantly, he said Li had telephoned him several times during that year and that they had discussed superconductors. The provenance of a reproduced email on a blog is weaker than an official government record or independently authenticated correspondence, so it should not be treated as conclusive proof of Li’s employment arrangements. But chronologically it matters. The Huntsville Business Journal also reported that Li had still been publicly active in 2003, when she gave a presentation entitled “Measurability of AC Gravity Fields” at a MITRE conference alongside an official associated with the US Army Aviation and Missile Command. The relevant historical question is therefore not why Li abruptly ceased to exist after receiving government money. It is why her public scientific output and accessibility declined. This distinction explains much of the mythology. Researchers trying to locate Li encountered dead ends: publications stopped, ordinary contact information became unreliable, colleagues lost touch with her and the results of defence-funded work did not appear openly. The internet then hardened that ambiguity into a biographical event. What the 2023 account actually establishes
Men’s testimony is powerful evidence about his mother’s personal whereabouts because he was not a distant colleague reconstructing events from professional silence. He was her son and, according to his account, ultimately her caregiver. But treating his interview carefully means distinguishing what it strongly establishes from what it merely reports.
The strongest conclusion concerns the disappearance claim itself. The Huntsville Business Journal explicitly reported that Li had never been a missing person “in any legal or official sense”. Men described continuing family contact, her life in Alabama, the 2014 accident, years of care at home and her death in 2021. His account also directly challenges the defection narrative. Men was categorical that his mother did not relocate to China, while the obituary establishes an Alabama endpoint to her life. The classified-work claim requires greater caution. Men could personally observe his mother’s behaviour and knew what she told her family, but he was deliberately excluded from the details of her research. His testimony therefore supports the proposition that Li and her family understood her work to be classified, not the stronger proposition that any particular secret antigravity technology existed or worked. Likewise, Men’s testimony about the 2014 collision supplies a detailed explanation for the final disappearance from professional life, but the sources located for this account do not provide a police collision report, medical record or other primary institutional document independently detailing the accident. The responsible formulation is therefore that Men reported the collision, permanent brain injury and subsequent Alzheimer’s diagnosis. His role as caregiver makes that testimony highly relevant, but family testimony should not silently be converted into an official medical or accident finding.
What remains unknown after the myth is removed
Correcting the disappearance story does not require pretending that every part of Ning Li’s later career is documented. There is still a genuine information gap — it is simply narrower than the conspiracy version suggests.
The public record does not disclose exactly what Li worked on during the years Men describes as classified defence employment, what results that work produced, or whether her later experiments validated any of the more ambitious claims associated with her superconducting-gravity research. That uncertainty should not be filled in either direction. Men’s testimony does not demonstrate that Li produced a successful antigravity device which the government concealed. Conversely, the absence of publicly available results cannot prove that all subsequent work was unsuccessful. The appropriate conclusion is more limited: the outcome of whatever later classified research she performed remains publicly unresolved.
The same discipline applies to the 2014 accident. A researcher associated with unusual defence work being struck by a vehicle can sound suspicious when detached from ordinary context, but the family account cited by the Huntsville Business Journal does not allege that the collision was deliberate. No evidence located here establishes that it was connected to Li’s research. How the family account changed the story
George Men’s interview changes the Ning Li case because it separates three things that had become fused together in antigravity and UFO lore: public silence, secrecy and physical disappearance.
There is substantial evidence for the first. Li’s publication trail became sparse, colleagues had difficulty reaching her and details of her later work were unavailable publicly. The result is not a perfectly documented biography. It is a much more precise assessment of the particular claim that matters here. Ning Li disappeared from the open scientific record; the available evidence does not show that Ning Li herself disappeared. The difference between those propositions is the difference between a legitimate historical information gap and a missing-scientist mystery.
For the broader catalogue of allegedly vanished or suspiciously deceased researchers associated with UFO and unconventional propulsion research, that distinction is crucial. Li’s case demonstrates how easily loss of public visibility can be retrospectively recoded as disappearance, especially when classified defence work, extraordinary technological claims and geopolitical rumours are already present. George Men’s account does not unlock the secrets of his mother’s research. It does something more readily testable: it supplies a coherent personal history where the disappearance narrative had largely been built from silence.
